A Beloved-Despised Tradition: Modern Jewish Identity and Neo Hasidic Writing at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century

This broad range study explores the modern romanticism of the hasidic movement at the beginning of the 20^th century, particularly as it found its expression in the writings of Buber, Peretz, Berdichevsky and Horodezky. The study shows how the romanticizing of the movement was part of the attempt by these authors and others to utilize their image of Hassidism in order to forge an alternate anti-rabbinic modern Jewish identity.
