Tips on life in Beer-Sheva

Please note that most shops and services in Israel are closed between Friday afternoon and Saturday evening for Shabbat, and on the Jewish holidays. This includes public transportation.

Guide for Living in Beer Sheva

Transportation
  • In Beer Sheva you can order a private taxi (22 NIS for a ride inside the city), by telephone. A few of the station's numbers are: 6434343, 6424242 and so on (some of are also available on Saturdays and holidays). There is also a city bus, the Metro-Dan line (3.60 NIS), schedules are available at *5100 by phone, or http://www.metrodan.com/ (Hebrew). From the university to the mall, central station and the city there are lines 5, 7 and 8. From the Gimel dorms: lines 4 and 5.
  • From Beer Sheva to destinations outside the city there are several options of transportation: Train to Tel-Aviv (and as far north as Nahariya) for schedule see: http://www.israrail.org.il/english/index.html or phone: 03-5774000 / 5770*. Metropolin buses to Tel-Aviv http://www.metropoline.com/  (Hebrew) or telephone *5900. Egged buses travel all over the country, for information see: http://www.egged.co.il/Eng/  or phone: *2800. For information on all the bus companies, lines and fares in Israel see: "http://otobusim.co.il/otobusim/front2007/homepage.asp?design=2007" (in Hebrew).

Groceries
The cheapest places to buy groceries are the outdoor market, the "Machsaney Ha Shuk" supermarket and the "Shufersal Dill" supermarket. In addition, these are all located near bus stops which is an additional convenience. The supermarket that most of the students prefer is "Mega", which is more expensive but has almost everything, or the supermarket in the "BIG" shopping center. Near Mega there are one "Russian" supermarkets – "Mina" , And in the "BIG" shopping center another "Russian" supermarkets "Tiv Taam" - that are also open on Saturdays and holidays, and import special products from Europe.

Entertainment in Beer Sheva
  • Events in the city at http://www.kivunim7.co.il  (Hebrew).
  • Pubs – Almost all of the pubs are open on Friday evenings as well. There are a few pubs in the vicinity of the university, for example "Publo" near the Dalet dorms, "Manga" in the Teachers' center, "Gaos" in the Gimel dorms and "Monchila" near the Gimel dorms. Then there are many pubs in the old city, and the most well-known is "Baraka", which also has good concerts and dance evenings. There are more pubs situated on the road to Omer, for example "Chicka", "Izzi Pub" (near the Animal Hospital; Closed on Fridays!!) and the "Omer pub" (in Omer's industrial area). On the other side of the city, in the "Kiryat Yehudit" industrial area one can find the discotheque of Beer Sheva, "The Forum", and its pub – "Factor". There are additional pubs around the same area, for example the "Q", which also used to have a gay night once a week (a long time ago).
  • Restaurants – well, one doesn't come to Beer Sheva to eat, but there are still a few good options for different budgets. Hummus – there are two new Hummus restaurants not far from the university:  "Humus Hamsa" behind building 90 and "Humus Masbaha" near the Gimel dorms. Falafel – many many many. People might recommend the falafel in Oren center but our recommendation is "Falafel Ha'Kerem" in Schuna (neighborhood) Beit, on Bialik Street. Other good options are "The Green Falafel" in the old city, near the Dutch Street or "Asulin", near the police station. Chinese – in "Heichal Ha'Tarbut" (the cultural center) there is one restaurant which has business deals during most of the day, buffet style. Moroccan – there is an expensive restaurant in the city. Italian – the best restaurant in Beer Sheva is "Rigoletto" in the "BIG" shopping center, there are also "La Piazza" in "Kiryat Ha-Memshala" and "Spagettim" in the "BIG". Gourmet – there are two restaurants on the same street – Smilanski, in the old city, one features a French kitchen, "Achuzat Halperin" and the other specializes mainly in wine, it is called "Chatzer Ha Yayin". Meat – Without a doubt, the best place to have grilled meat  is "Amuna" in the old city. There is also "Sami Ve Susu" in the market, "Shipudey Ezra" near the market, "Shipudey Shufan" near the central bus station and "Shipudy Ha Tikva" in "Kiryat Ha Memshala". Brazilian cuisine/meat – outside of the city. Sandwiches – there are quite a few, but the recommendation of the house is "Saba Gepetto" near the courthouse.
  • Cinemas – Besides the university's cinema, "Negative", there is one in the "Negev" mall and another one in the "Avia" mall (line 12 from the hospital, on Metzada Street).
  • Cafés – Most of these can be found in the "BIG" shopping center, the mall, and "Kiryat Ha Memshala". In the old city there is "Pitput", about one block from the mall, "Apropo" near the police station and "Mateh Midbar" near the youth center (which also has massages). There are very good cakes and sandwiches at "Saba Gepetto", which was already recommended under "restaurants". Good coffee and excellent food and atmosphere at "Mona", near the Dalet dorms.
  • Tourist Sites – there is an Art museum in the old city, the Air Force museum in Hatzerim and Be'er-Avraham (Historical-Archaeological site) also in the old city. The Ottoman old city is also an option for a day tour. On Thursdays you can visit the Bedouin market on “Derech Hebron” street. You can also go to the office of tourism in Beer Sheva on Derech Hebron 1, on the corner of Keren Kayemet St.
